Rollin', Rollin', Rollin' down the Danube

Monday 5/3
On Monday we had an all-day tour outside of Budapest. On the bus, the tour guide pointed out some ancient Roman ruins, including some from the city center when Romans settled there in 200AD.

We stopped at the Caprice center where they do stuff with diamonds. It wasn't really that interesting, really just a way to get you to spend money on jewelry, but I saw a funny map of the US with Arkansas next to California. I guess it's so big compared to Hungary, they figure they can just throw a state anywhere and maybe they'll be right?

The first big stop was the Esztergom Basilica.

From outside the church, there was a view of Slovakia.

Next, we drove a bit more, passing more Roman ruins – this time, of a Roman summer palace. We stopped on a hill/mountain in Visegrád for lunch and ended up sitting with two American couples (I think the only other Americans on the tour).

The final stop was Szentendre, a little town that I think the guide said was very artsy. There were lots of little shops that I looked around in while waiting for the boat that would take us down the Danube, back to Budadpest. I got a cute little jewelry box in one store, after having to take my phone out to use the calculator in each place to figure out how much everything actually cost.

The boat ride back dropped us off on the Pest side (we could have gotten off at Buda, but it's the older part of the city and most of the restaurants are in Pest). Holly and I walked a little and stopped to get a small dinner in a cute little square. We didn't want to fill up because we had special plans for dessert: Gerbaud House. Both of our tour books mentioned this place, and it seemed from the menu that you're really just supposed to go for dessert, so we had quick chicken ceaser salads (which were reeeeally yummy) and then ordered caramel/chocolate/vanilla sundaes at Gerbaud House for dessert. Yummmm.

Also, these are just random pictures of around the river. Not sure what the big building is.
